C.P.E. Bach - Symphony in D major

Haydn - Symphony No. 94 Surprise

Since winning BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2016 Sheku Kaneh-Mason’s career has taken off big time. His debut recording, Inspiration¸ released in February 2018, leapt into the classical charts; his solo performance at the Royal Wedding in May attracted the highest praise from those who were there and from millions of television viewers worldwide; and in June he won two Classic Brit awards – male artist of the year and the critics’ choice. We are thrilled to welcome Sheku to Milton Keynes.

Richard Wagner surprised his wife with the first performance of the Siegfried Idyll on her birthday on Christmas day 1870. Haydn’s 94th Symphony is known as the Surprise for good reason. And J.S Bach’s son’s Symphony will come as a very pleasant surprise to all who don’t already know it.

During this concert the MK Community Foundation will present the Christopher Hopkinson Memorial Bursary to the winner of their 2019 award for musical excellence. MKCO is delighted to partner MK Community Foundation to find a talented winner.

 Beethoven - Symphony No. 7

The Lark Ascending is undoubtedly one of the most popular pieces in the classical repertoire. Vaughan Williams is said to have composed it while watching British troops embarking for France at the start of World War 1, so it is fitting that its meditational qualities shouldoccupy our senses as the centenary of the end of that war is commemorated.

To perform The Lark Ascending and play Saint-Saens’ Introduction and Rondo capriccioso we welcome the young Korean violinist Yoon-Hee Kim, a fast-rising star.

The programme concludes with Beethoven’s 7th symphony.  Popular since its first performance in 1813 it features, to memorable effect, on the soundtrack of the 2010 film The King’s Speech.
