All-Female Orchestra Marks International Women's Day Celebrations In MK
Milton Keynes City Orchestra (MKCO) is celebrating International Women’s Day Anita Watson Headshot High Quality with a performance on 7th March, by an all-female orchestra, under the baton of Sian Edwards with guest soprano Anita Watson. The concert is sponsored by MK Accountants Keens Shay Keens and staged in association with MK Community Foundation at The Venue theatre Walton High Campus.
Marian Livingstone, Chairman of MKCO said ”We have a first-class freelance orchestra with a depth of musical talent to create an all-female orchestra for all to enjoy and celebrate the body of work from women in the classical music industry. It is a delight to welcome back Sian Edwards who has helped to shape the creative work of the orchestra in recent years. She performs to great reviews around the world and works tirelessly as Head of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music. We are also thrilled that our female line up is completed with internationally renowned soprano Anita Watson who will perform three beautiful arias from The Marriage of Figaro. “
International Women’s Day is celebrated on the day after the concert, Sunday 8th March. It began as a campaigning movement in the early 20th century where oppression and inequality spurred women to demand change. It is now an official holiday in 27 countries, a global day to celebrate women and women’s achievements. MK Community Foundation launched the celebration in Milton Keynes four years ago and successfully campaigned for a pillar of celebration to be placed on the MK Rose in Campbell Park.
Julia Upton, Chief Executive of MK Community Foundation commented. “MKCO is one of the recipients of our 2014 STEP grant and we are pleased to be supporting their ambitious developments, particularly at this unique concert. Our 2015 theme of ‘Make it Happen’ is especially appropriate as grant funding is provided to a wide variety of organisations, including vital help to women and girls in crisis.”
The concert programme features Mozart Symphony No.38 (Prague) Wagner Siegfried Idyll and Schubert Symphony No. 3 with the Mozart aria performances. Tickets are available here priced at £22.00, £10.00 and under 18’s £5.00
